Canton porcelain on display

Date: 12th January 2019 – 10th March 2019
Location: 1/F, Dongguan Museum

Canton porcelain is famous for its beautify and magnificence. It was specially developed for export during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty. In order to satisfy demand from the European market, Guangzhou craftsmen drew pictures appealing to Westerner's tastes on the white Jingdezhen porcelain. These were then baked at low temperatures. The style was a blend of Chinese and foreign cultures, retaining not only traditional Chinese painting art, but also absorbing the essence of Western art.

The exhibition selected 59 sets, totalling 73 pieces of Canton porcelain, which were divided into two parts. The first part describes Canton porcelain, the origin and development. The second part focuses on the pigments, shapes and patterns used in Canton porcelain. The exhibits include Western-style tableware, utensils for hot drinks and bartending. The utensil decorations include Chinese courtyard life, literary allusions, traditional flowers and birds, as well as badge patterns.
