18th March (2nd February in Lunar Calendar), was the day of annual Dongkeng Labour Selling Festival. Thousands of citizens and tourists gathered in Dongkeng Town to watch cultural performances, visit the traditional bazaar, try local cuisine, play with water, and feel the charm of this provincial intangible cultural heritage.

This year the festival focused on the display of intangible cultural heritage. It involved local cuisine exhibitions, talent shows, water-splashing carnivals, traditional bazaars, and even career fairs. Plenty of visitors came to Dongkeng to experience the unique custom.

Guests from afar visited the festival
Visitors can watch wonderful art performances in the morning and afternoon, and view various live demonstrations of Dongguan intangible cultural heritage, such as Chashan Doll and Shilong Hand Drum. One can also enjoy traditional foods with various characteristics such as Dongkeng Sugary Glutinous Rice Balls, Egg Shatters and much more.

The festival welcomed special guests, too. Su Yaolun (Deputy Director of the Dongguan Disabled Enterprise Entrepreneurs Association), led some friends to Dongkeng to encourage a more positive life. Hundreds of citizens from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan joined the festival and witnessed the significant development of the town.

"Water Splashing" is the locals’ favourite
Many local citizens form teams to splash water, and were organized to “attack” specific targets. Children also brought water guns and water balls to join the crowds. They all put on raincoats and followed their parents to enjoy the pleasure of water splashing.

However, due to the large number of festival participants, the road became slippery and wet. Elders and toddlers are warned to refrain from entering the splashing scene to avoid slipping or being trampled by crowds. Last, but not the least, one must take good care of personal belongings such as mobile phones, cameras, and wallets. At the same time, it is suggested that citizens wear raincoats and try not to travel alone.

Traditional culture faces changes
In ancient times, the second day of February in the lunar calendar was the trading day for Dongkeng agricultural implements and agricultural product bazaars. Till now, the festival still shows these classic features. On the day of the festival, there are a number of shops selling traditional commodities such as ancient farm tools, farm products, special furniture, coloured Kylin heads, and lucky windmills.
