Dongguan libraries serve 33,000 readers per day in 2017     04/24/2018 09:47

23rd April is the 23rd World Book Day. In 2017, the total public library visitors in Dongguan reached 12.113 million, meaning approximately 33,000 people visit libraries in Dongguan every day.

Nearly 15,000 books borrowed from libraries each day

According to data provided by Dongguan Library, this year’s 12.113 million is an increase of 1.526 million compared to 10.587 million in 2016. In other words, 33,000 people visited Dongguan library every day, a daily increase of more than 4,000 people over 2016.

Borrowed books from Dongguan public libraries reached 5.646 million in 2017, which is approximately 15,000 books borrowed each day. Compared to the previous year, Dongguan citizens borrowed an extra 1,500 books each day.

Dongguan youth favour inspirational books

In terms of reading choices and preferences, the 2017 All People Reading Trends Report (released by Amazon China) indicates Dongguan surpassed Shanghai and ranked 9th in the list of “Most Favouring Reading Management City Books”. The 2017 youth reading report published by Palm Review shows that young people in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Zhengzhou, and Dongguan are most interested in inspirational books.

The most popular children’s books, according to Dongguan Library statistics, were “You Don’t Know How Good Tomorrow is”, “The Bear Hugging Happiness” and “Maths Adventures in Adventure Island” in that order.

In Amazon China’s mid-2017 book ranking list, Shenzhen, Dongguan, and Xiamen have the highest per capita purchases of paid Kindle e-books, ranking third in the Amazon China per capita purchase e-book cities list.

4 newly-built picture book houses for children

In Dongguan, libraries are located not only in urban areas but also in towns, districts, communities and even factories. By the end of 2017, three levels of the Dongguan City Public Libraries were fully built, i.e. municipal level, town (village) level, and village (community) level, including a central hall, 52 branches, 102 service stations, and 20 24-hour self-service libraries.

In January 2018, the first four picture book houses of Dongguan Library were officially opened. They are located in Wanjiang Library, Shilong Library, Dalang Changtang Library and Nancheng Central Kindergarten, becoming a new place for children to read.

Among them, Wanjiang Picture Book House is the first of its kind built by the city library, featuring original English picture book reading and robot-assisted reading while Nancheng Central Kindergarten Picture Book House is warm and proffers a childlike design. Dalang Longtang Picture Book House aims to become a community parent-child library mainly loaning Chinese and English picture books, reading instruction, and reading promotion services for children and parents.
