Dongguan People's Hospital managed to carry out convalescent plasma transfusion to treat patient with novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) on 16th February, becoming the first in Dongguan to do so. The antiviral effect of the therapy is encouraging.

Around 01:00 on 16th February, led by the Dongguan Municipal Health Bureau and supported by Dongguan Blood Centre and Dongguan Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Dongguan People's Hospital took blood plasma from a patient who had recovered from COVID-19. The plasma was then transfused to a seriously ill patient.

Dongguan People's Hospital is a major designated hospital to admit COVID-19 confirmed cases in Dongguan. Since the fifth trial version of the diagnosis and treatment plan, released on 5th February by the National Health Commission (NHC), the hospital has been paying close attention to the application of convalescent plasma therapy, and actively preparing to conduct the therapy.

On 15th February, a recovered coronavirus patient agreed to donate plasma to those in severe condition. The plasma was collected at the central blood station at 14:00 and sent to the CDC. Once there, medical workers performed RNA detection for the plasma samples. The central blood station performed follow-up tests on the plasma, and the results showed that the required plasma was present. At approximately 00:00 on 16th February, the CDC had completed their analysis and confirmed the plasma was negative for CORVID-19. Medical workers of Dongguan People's hospital, who had been waiting in the central blood station, sent the plasma to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Wanjiang Branch as soon as they got the news. The plasma was immediately transfused into a critically ill patient. The joint efforts of all parties have brought greater opportunity for recovery to patients.

Zhang Dingyu (Dean of Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital) expressed on 13th February that treatment using donated plasma from those whom have recovered from COVID-19 has a degree of effectiveness for patients in severe and critical condition. The convalescent plasma of recovered patients contains many different kinds of antibodies which will fight the virus. He called upon all patients who have recovered to donate this precious plasma to help other suffering patients.
