On 3rd August, the National Development and Reform Commission approved the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (hereafter GBA) intercity railway construction plan. Dongguan, it should be noted, will see a net increase of 4 railway lines.

The approval requires intensified efforts to construct a well-developed intercity rail transit network on existing infrastructure. It is expected to boost connectivity in the GBA and build a one-hour traffic circle linking major cities in the GBA, a two-hour traffic circle linking major GBA cities and prefecture-level cities in the province and a three-hour traffic circle linking major GBA cities to neighbouring provincial capitals.

In terms of present construction arrangements, 13 intercity railways and 5 rail hub projects are in the planning stage with a total mileage of approximately 775km. The total investment required exceeds 474 billion RMB.
