According to the press conference held by the Dongguan government on the evening of June 20, gene sequencing analysis conducted by Guangdong provincial CDC has found that the virus carried by Li, the previously confirmed case in Nancheng’s Baiyue Shangcheng residential area on June 18, is the Delta variant. Therefore, it is an imported-related local case (or second-generation imported case).

Luo Dong, deputy director of Dongguan CDC, said that the virus gene sequence of Li was very similar to that of her husband Xiao, a confirmed case in Shenzhen. It’s not in the same branch as that in the Guangzhou outbreak.

"Although both the genomic sequence of Li and that in Guangzhou belong to the delta variant, there is a big difference between them, and no variable sites common to that in the middle and late stages of the Guangzhou outbreak were found, suggesting that they come from different sources of infection," said Luo.

Also, according to Luo, in the confirmed case reported in Machong Town on June 20, Jia was identified as close contact. Whether he had been in the same place simultaneously with Li and Xiao is still under further investigation. Up to June 20, according to the initial investigation, there are 86 close contacts and five secondary close contacts of Jia in Dongguan, all of whom are undergoing centralized isolation medical observation. On the evening of June 19, the nucleic acid testing was carried out again in Jia's university, and the results of all were negative.

According to the press conference held Monday, the latest genome sequencing results of Jia, the new case reported in Machong Town on June 20, further proved that the source of Jia's infection was Li and her husband Xiao.
