Shenzhen residents can now receive an HPV vaccine without crossing the border to Hong Kong as Luohu Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital under the Luohu Hospital Group gave the first injection of the HPV vaccine in Guangdong Province to a young woman Monday afternoon.

HPV is short for human papilloma virus. As much as 99.7 percent of cervical cancer patients have been detected to be carriers of HPV in their DNA. Receiving the HPV vaccine can largely prevent cervical cancer in women.

The World Health Organization has suggested that countries, which meet the requirements, introduce an HPV vaccine injection service.

China has introduced HPV2 and HPV4, but not all cities and areas are covered by the service. The two types of vaccines currently used in China are produced by Glaxo Smith Kline (GSK) and both are closely related to 80 percent of cervical cancer cases in the country.

The newly introduced HPV2 at the Luohu hospital is suitable for females between 9 and 25 years old. The hospital said that the HPV4 vaccine for women between 20 and 45 years old would be available by the end of this year.

Both HPV2 and HPV4 vaccine reception requires three injections over six months. HPV2 will cost 1,815 yuan (US$274).

According to one of its executive members, the Luohu Hospital Group has been preparing for the introduction of the HPV vaccine and has invited experts from home and abroad to provide training for its medical staff.

Residents can make appointments online for the HPV vaccine by following the public WeChat account: Yuemiao (约苗) and filling out an appointment form. Also, by entering the keyword “cervical cancer vaccine” (宫颈癌疫苗) on Taobao.com, residents can also access the platform to make an appointment with the hospital.
