Dongkeng Town is located in the middle of Dongguan, offering distinct locational advantages and convenient transportation. The town covers 23.8 square kilometers, with a registered population of 32,000. Dongkeng was named a National Top 1000 Town, National Advanced Unit for Ageing Work, Provincial Hygiene Town, Provincial Town of Excellence in Education, Provincial Professional Town in Technological Innovation and Municipal Civilized Town. The town boasts a long history, especially in regards to its Lingnan farming culture. For example, the “Maishen Festival” on the 2nd day of the second lunar month is a surviving cultural event that continues to thrive as a popular festival in Dongguan.
In 2007, Dongkeng’s “Maishen Festival” was listed in the second group of intangible cultural heritages in Guangdong Province. In May, 2010 Dongkeng’s Wooden Fish Song was listed in the third group of state intangible cultural heritages.
