Machong is located in the hinterland of the Pearl River Delta, between Guangzhou and Dongguan. It is famous for its water scenery, folk art and the dragon boat culture. As one of the central towns in the Guangdong Province, it ranks among the “Top 1,000 towns of China” and was named the “Key Town for Modern Port Logistics of China,” “Education Power Town of Guangdong Province,” “National Hygiene Town” and “Civilized Town of Dongguan”. The town covers 91 square kilometers.
In recent years, Machong has focused on preserving and encouraging cultural activities. In 1999, Machong was honored as the “Home of Chinese Folk Arts”. A number of dragon boat events are held in Machong every year, which include the “Machong scene” (On the sixteenth day of the fifth lunar month), the “Zhangpeng scene (On the ninth day of the fifth lunar month) and the Ouyong scene (On the eighteenth day of the fifth lunar month).
