This summer, Dongguan invites the public on a cultural journey where timeless literature meets modern creativity. As part of the 2025 South China Book Festival series, the Dongguan Library is hosting a unique immersive exhibition themed "A Journey Through the Red Chamber," running through August 26.
Based on the literary masterpiece Dream of the Red Chamber, the exhibition reinterprets the beloved classic through five themed zones, including rare manuscripts, 3D installations, historical illustrations, film and stage adaptations, and a digital reading zone. Visitors can walk through a life-sized version of the Grand Garden, interact with 3D book installations, and scan QR codes to access e-books instantly.
Beyond the exhibits, visitors can join a series of cultural events. On August 2, Professor Miao Huaiming from Nanjing University will give a lecture on how Dream of the Red Chamber evolved from a private manuscript into a cultural icon. That same afternoon, costumed performers portraying classic characters like Jia Baoyu, Lin Daiyu and Wang Xifeng will bring the Red Chamber story to life with a live character parade in the library lobby.
There's also plenty in store for families and young readers, including a parent-child adventure journey, stamp collection activities, Red Chamber-themed coloring, and storytelling sessions. These events are held in coordination with local library branches and cultural venues across Dongguan, allowing the spirit of this literary treasure to resonate citywide.
