Dongguan was crowned champion of the 2026 Guangdong City Basketball League, widely known as "GDBA," after defeating Shenzhen 108-73 in Game 2 of the finals at Dongguan Basketball Center on August 1. The emphatic victory completed a 2-0 series sweep and brought the provincial title home to China's renowned "Basketball City."
Running from March 21 to August 1, this year's tournament spanned nearly five months and featured more than 120 games involving teams from all 21 prefecture-level cities in Guangdong. Unlike professional leagues, GDBA brings together amateur players from a wide range of occupations. With an average age of just 24.3, they displayed remarkable energy, skill and determination. Dongguan fought its way through the 21-team field, delivering professional-level performances that raised the bar for grassroots basketball.
Dongguan's victory is rooted in the city's formidable basketball tradition. Nearly 7,000 basketball courts and more than 5,000 tournaments each year sustain a thriving ecosystem spanning professional clubs, youth training and grassroots games.
From 2015 to 2024, Dongguan won the Guangdong Provincial Men's Basketball League title for an unprecedented ten consecutive years. Now, with the competition upgraded to GDBA, the city has once again finished on top. More than half of the GDBA teams have coaches or key players with ties to Dongguan's training system, a powerful testament to the depth of China's "Basketball City."
