One of China's most popular stage productions is coming to Dongguan. The acclaimed poetic dance drama A Tapestry of a Legendary Land(《只此青绿》) will arrive at Dongguan Yulan Theatre for three performances on September 18 and 19. Inspired by one of China's most celebrated landscape paintings, the production invites audiences to step into the artistic world of the Song Dynasty.
The drama draws inspiration from A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains, painted by the young artist Wang Ximeng more than 900 years ago. Through expressive movement, traditional-style music and striking stage design, the dance drama brings the painting's mountains, rivers and iconic blue-green palette to life, without relying on spoken dialogue.
Since its premiere in 2021, the production has staged more than 900 performances across over 80 cities in China and abroad, including stops in Singapore, Turkey, the United States, Canada and Russia. Performances have repeatedly sold out, with tickets often difficult to secure. An excerpt featured on China's 2022 Spring Festival Gala reached a cumulative audience of more than eight billion, sparking a nationwide fascination with the painting's distinctive blue-green aesthetic and turning the production into a cultural phenomenon.
This much-loved dance drama will take the stage at Dongguan Yulan Theatre this Friday and Saturday. Come and experience the elegance of Chinese aesthetics as a 900-year-old landscape painting comes alive through dance, music and stage design.
