As Chinese New Year draws near, the streets of Dongguan are buzzing with festive decorations, bustling flower markets, and the aroma of local delicacies. While many are heading home for family reunions, one graceful "White Swan" has chosen to stay in Dongguan, her second home, to embrace the unique charm of a Chinese New Year.

Mariline GoodHue, a professional ballet dancer from Canada, has made Dongguan her stage and her home. A former performer with the National Ballet of Canada and a mentor for the Royal Academy of Dance, Mariline boasts 13 years of professional ballet teaching experience. Today, she is the founder and chief choreographer of a ballet school in Dongcheng, where she continues to share her passion for dance.

Her journey to Dongguan began when she retired from the stage and followed her Canadian-Chinese husband, David, to China. After exploring several cities, the couple chose Dongguan, a young and vibrant city, as the perfect place to settle down.

"For me, Dongguan has everything," Mariline shared with a warm smile. "Friendly people, lovely students, and delicious food, especially the roasted goose, which has become my favorite." She also enjoys the city's mild winters, a welcome change from the freezing Canadian climate.

Mariline is deeply inspired by Dongguan's cultural openness and its flourishing arts scene. "Dongguan is a young city full of vitality. It has a rich cultural heritage and, at the same time, an incredible openness to new ideas," she said. From dynamic art festivals to growing interest in ballet, she sees great potential in the city's artistic development.

Recently, she directed and performed her original ballet, Dasha's Dream, alongside her students at the Dongguan Culture Centre. The show captivated audiences, showcasing the city's enthusiasm for ballet and the performing arts.

This year, Mariline chose to stay in Dongguan to experience the city's vibrant New Year celebrations. She explored the bustling flower markets with her family and friends, savoring the festive atmosphere. Her highlight? A visit to an iconic local restaurant in Guancheng to enjoy its famous roasted goose.

"Dongguan's New Year is so lively and full of warmth," Mariline said. "As a foreigner, it's meaningful to immerse myself in such rich traditions, it's truly unforgettable."
