Dongguan recorded a strong tourism performance during the 2026 May Day holiday, standing out as one of the Greater Bay Area's emerging holiday destinations.
From May 1 to 5, Guangdong received 47.069 million tourist visits, up 2.1 percent year on year, with tourism revenue reaching RMB 29.77 billion, up 0.9 percent.
Dongguan outpaced the provincial average, welcoming 3.8455 million tourist visits, an increase of 7.6 percent, while tourism spending reached RMB 2.281 billion, up 9.4 percent.
Behind the figures was a citywide holiday program built around culture, tourism, sports, commerce and technology. This year, Dongguan rolled out more than 100 cultural, tourism and sports activities, along with over 100 preferential offers, creating a lively holiday atmosphere across scenic spots, museums, shopping districts, parks and local towns.
Music and sports were among the strongest crowd-pullers. The 2026 Dongguan Strawberry Music Festival attracted about 90,000 visits over three days and is estimated to have generated RMB 360 million in related consumption. Around 75 percent of festivalgoers came from outside the city, helping boost hotel occupancy, transport demand and business district foot traffic around Songshan Lake.
