Located in northern Dongguan, between the Guangzhou and Shenzhen corridor, Shijie is the hometown of Yuan Chonghuan, one of China’s national heroes during of Ming Dynasty. The town is honored as the “Pearl of Dongjiang River” by Guan Shanyue, a traditional Chinese painter. With a total area of 36.2 square kilometers, Shijie has a registered population of about 44,800 together with 203,200 migrant workers.The town has been named the “First Famous Electronic Information Industry Town in China”, “National Demonstration Area for Promoting Nationwide Farmer Health”, “National Hygiene Town”, “National Beautiful Environment Town”, “China’s Famous Green Town”, “Civilized Town of Guangdong Province”, “Education Power Town of Guangdong Province”, “Ecology Model Town of Guangdong Province” and “Garden Town of Guangdong Province”.
Shijie promotes cultural and focus its efforts on the construction of recreation and sports facilities. For example, Yuan Chonghuan Middle School was chosen as the Training Base of Reserve Talents for the Chinese Shooting Association by the Shooting Management Center of State General Administration of Sports. Facilities in Yuan Chonghuan Memorial Park have been upgraded to develop cultural tourism.
Currently, the town’s electronic industry has featured dominant advantages and a complete industrial chain. There are more than more than 500 industrial enterprises in the town. 110 varieties of computer information products are manufactured in Shijie Town, with assembly matching ratio above 90%. Shijie Town was also named the “Important Digital Industry Town” by the municipal government, “Provincial Professional Town Technological Innovation Pilot” by Guangdong Province, “National Electronic Information Industry Base in Pearl River Delta” by the National Ministry of Information Industry and the first “China’s Famous Electronic Information Industry Town” in the country by the China Electronic Chamber of Business.
The vegetables distribution industry is also an important business in Shijie. Currently, Shijie supplies more than 900 tons of vegetables to Hong Kong every day, accounting for half of Hong Kong’s vegetable market.
