Humen Bridge is the largest scale bridge built in Guangdong Province so far. It took only four and a half years for this tremendous-scale modern, first-class bridge of the world to be designed, built, supervised and compeletely scientifically developed by the Chinese to be opened to traffic. Humen Bridge, with a length of 15.76 kilometers and the main bridge of 4.6 kilometers, was opened to traffic at 10:00 a.m. on May 1st of 1997. It dramatically shortens the trip between the West bank of the Pearl River estuary to the East bank and thus shortens the land trip by 120 kilometers from Hong Kong and Shenzhen to Zhuhai and Zhongshan etc. Now it takes only 10 minutes to get from one side of the Pearl River estuary to the other side.

Here is the ancient battlefield of the Opium War. In the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty, Lin Zexu led the army and local people of Humen to construct some iron chains of hundreds of meters in length for crossing the river. In order to keep out invading enemies, they established the impregnable pass from which it was hard to come in and even harder to go out.
