Hakka folk songs have a history of more than a thousand years since the Tang dynasty. As folk songs are sung in the Hakka dialect, they are heavily influenced by the traditional style of the Book of Songs, the Tang poems, the ancient Shu poetry and some Southern folk songs. Today, such performances and competitions are still held on holidays among Hakka towns like Qingxi and Zhangmutou.
