Puppet Plays become famous in the Guangxu years of the Qing Dynasty. Yemen, a farmer in Shengtang village from Dalang town bought a set of puppets from Fujian, and marked the beginning of this tradition with his popular puppet show in the temple fair. Later, Chen Manrong from Xiangtou village took over this custom and set up the Xiangtou Puppet Theatre. Dalang puppets are carved from Dram, and the shows are close to Cantonese Opera performance and singing style, making it unique in the Lingnan area. Like opera roles, different characters have different masks, expressions, costumes and props fitting the role. On March 27, 2008, the Puppet Performance Base at the Dongguan Mass Art Museum was set up in Dalang.
