On October 12th, Guangzhou Public Resources Trading Center listed a bidding document for the Special research project on the optimization of passenger flow forecasting for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. A noteworthy feature of the document is that line 22, with speeds up to 160 kilometers per hour, is expected to be upgraded to an inter-city subway for the Greater Bay Area. It will also to be the first metro line linking Guangzhou, Dongguan and Shenzhen.

The focus of this study is the inter-city metropolitan railway, inculding that the Guangzhou metro line 18 will be extended southward to Zhongshan and Zhuhai, line 28 will be extended eastward to Dongguan and line 22 will be extended eastward to Dongguan and then run into Shenzhen.

Guangzhou Metro line 22 is currently undergoing construction. The metro line has been designed and constructed to world class standards. It can function as an urban subway and an intercity railway. As an urban subway, it will run through Nansha, Panyu, Liwan and Guangzhou South Railway Station, further consolidating Guangzhou South Railway Station's as a main hub for transportation in the region. It also has room allocated for a southbound extension to Nansha via Panyu Square station. When it becomes an inter-city high-speed railway in the Greater Bay Area, it will greatly shorten the travel time among the three cities. Dongguan citizens will be able to take the subway to Guangzhou and Shenzhen in the future.
