According to information released by Guangdong Transportation Group recently, the construction of the Shizi Yang estuary passage will start construction at the end of 2021 and open to traffic in 2027, marking a new cross-river pass to Dongguan. The project will start at Xinlian Village of Dongguan's Humen Town, run west through Shatian Town, cross the Pearl River between Humen Port and Xiaohu Island in Guangzhou and end in Dagang Town in Guangzhou’s Nansha, with a total length of about 35 kilometers. The whole line will be a bridge with eight lanes in both directions. The double-layer bridge is planned to be adopted for cross-river section, which will be about 12.5 kilometers long.

The project will be located between Nansha Bridge and Humen Bridge, directly connecting the two major development areas of Nansha Free Trade Zone and Dongguan Binhaiwan Bay Area. It has been included in the "Implementation Opinions on the Implementation of the ‘Development Planning Outline of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area’" issued by Guangdong and "Infrastructure Interconnection Planning for Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area" issued by the National Development and Reform Commission.

Currently, there are five cross-river passages (including bridges and tunnels) built on the Pearl River Estuary, namely: Huangpu Bridge, Nansha Bridge, Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High-speed Rail, Humen Bridge, and Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. The construction of the new passage is expected to further relieve the traffic pressure on both sides of the Pearl River Estuary.
