Wu Mugui, a 73-year-old craftsman from Dongguan, has been making hundreds of model-ships over the past dozen years, which earned him the reputation as "the king of model-ships" in Humen Town.

Artisans have been playing an essential role in Chinese manufacturing. Dongguan, famed as a manufacturing city, is home to generations of distinguished artisans who persist in handicraft manufacturing, sticking to their original aspiration and striving for excellence.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and the first year of China's 14th Five-Year Plan period. To mark the occasion, "Dongguan Today" is publishing a series of reports featuring craftsmen's stories in the city.

Adjoining Shiziyang and Lingdingyang estuaries, Dongguan has a long history of the fishery industry. With the passing of years, many fishermen no longer engage in the business, leaving a large number of fish boats "out of work". To evoke people's memories of fishing vessels, Wu Mugui, a 73-year-old craftsman from Dongguan, has been making hundreds of model-ships of various sizes and kinds on his own over the past dozen years, which earned him the reputation as "the king of model-ships" in his neighbourhood.
