Today (July 11), Dongguan enters Sanfu, the hottest period of the year, which will span a total of 40 days this year, making it one of the earliest occurrences of the dog days in this century. It is reported that it's the ninth consecutive year in China since 2015 that Sanfu lasted for 40 days.
- Early stage (初伏): July 11 to July 20 (10 days)
- Middle stage (中伏): July 21 to August 9 (20 days)
- Late stage (末伏): August 10 to August 19 (10 days)
The city is grappling with scorching temperatures, with a maximum temperature exceeding 35°C. It is expected to experience mostly cloudy to sunny weather from July 12 to 15, with persistently hot and scorching temperatures. Looking ahead to July 16 to 20, there will be frequent thunderstorms due to tropical disturbances. As the weather remains hot, please take precautions against heat and sun exposure, and avoid outdoor activities during the peak heat hours. Be mindful of localized thunderstorms in the afternoon.
According to the National Meteorological Center, high-temperature weather is defined as when the maximum daily temperature reaches or exceeds 35°C. A continuous period of such high-temperature weather lasting for three days or more is referred to as a heatwave.
Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to health problems such as heatstroke and heat exhaustion. If not addressed promptly, these conditions can even be life-threatening.
Heatwaves can have various health impacts
Hot and humid weather can easily lead to various heat-related illnesses such as heat rash, heat edema, heat syncope, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke. It can also exacerbate the occurrence and progression of cardiovascular, respiratory, urinary, and nervous system diseases, including coronary heart disease and stroke.
Furthermore, dry and hot dusty environments can trigger or worsen asthma symptoms, while humid and hot environments facilitate the reproduction and transmission of respiratory infections. They can also cause acute kidney dysfunction, and in severe cases, even lead to kidney failure. These conditions can result in mental and behavioral disorders, cognitive impairment, anxiety, depression, and other psychological disorders. Adverse effects on the skin and eyes are also possible.
