Dongguan athlete wins GD's first gold at Paris Paralympics

At 18:00 Beijing time on August 29, Dongguan athlete Wang Xiaomei broke the world record with a time of 3 minutes 44.660 seconds, advancing to the finals.

At 22:41, Wang Xiaomei competed in the Women's C1-3 3000m Individual Pursuit Final at the track cycling event, claiming first place with a time of 3 minutes 41.692 seconds, once again setting a new world record. This victory secured the second gold medal for the Chinese delegation at the Paris Paralympics and the first gold medal for Guangdong Province.

This year, Dongguan sent 10 athletes to the Paris Paralympics, competing in athletics, archery, cycling, weightlifting, and swimming, marking the highest number of participants Dongguan has ever sent to the Paralympic Games. Among them, 24-year-old Wang Xiaomei had previously competed in the 16th Paralympic Games.

In 2014, Wang Xiaomei began her athletic training in Dongguan. She joined the Guangdong Disabled Cycling Team at the end of 2015. In 2018, she won four gold medals in the cycling events at the 10th National Games for Persons with Disabilities. In 2021, she claimed five gold medals in cycling at the 11th National Games for Persons with Disabilities. At the previous Tokyo Paralympics, Wang Xiaomei won a silver medal in the 3km Individual Pursuit. At the 2024 Paris Paralympics, she fulfilled her dream of becoming a champion by winning her first Paralympic gold medal.
