The long-anticipated "Southbound Travel for Guangdong Vehicles" scheme is gaining momentum, with promising developments that could soon allow vehicles registered in Guangdong, with single "YUE(粤)" plates, to drive directly into Hong Kong without requiring dual registration.

On October 8, Hong Kong's Secretary for Security, Chris Tang, revealed that discussions are underway between Hong Kong and Mainland authorities to enable Guangdong vehicles to park at Hong Kong International Airport. This means that in the near future, Dongguan drivers may have the exciting opportunity to drive directly into Hong Kong!

This scheme, if fully realized, would be a game-changer for Mainland travelers. Guangdong drivers could enjoy the convenience of driving into Hong Kong, parking at the airport, and easily catching flights to international destinations. Moreover, they could seamlessly connect to Hong Kong's MTR system for leisure trips to places like Disneyland and Lantau Island.

Since the full reopening of the border between Hong Kong and Mainland China last year, travel has surged. As of September this year, daily cross-border land traffic averages 658,000 passengers, surpassing pre-pandemic levels by over 50%. This surge highlights the need for enhanced border infrastructure and smoother travel experiences.
