The 2024 Dongguan Marathon unfolded in a burst of energy and excitement on December 22, drawing 22,000 runners to its meticulously designed course, hailed as the "most beautiful urban track." Returning after five years, the event showcased the charm of "trendy Dongguan" while celebrating diversity and inclusion through its first-ever Greater Bay Area Accessible Run. 

At the starting point near the Dongguan Civic Service Center, a kaleidoscope of participants donned colorful outfits, ready to embark on their respective challenges—full marathon, half marathon, or the joyous fun run. High-profile guests, including Dongguan's cultural and sports ambassadors like Paralympic champion Chen Minyi and tennis player Wang Yafan, added to the celebratory atmosphere.  

Runners with unforgettable experience

This year, the marathon set a national precedent by introducing separate awards for disabled athletes. Over 150 participants, including six wheelchair racers from Hong Kong, joined the Accessible Run."It's an incredible feeling to race alongside 20,000 others," shared a wheelchair athlete, highlighting the event's spirit of unity and equality.  

Visually impaired runner Weng Jiashan from Shenzhen, who completed his 49th marathon with the help of a guide, expressed heartfelt praise: "The support and smooth course design here set a benchmark for races across the country." Dongguan's innovative approach demonstrated its commitment to accessibility and shared joy through sports.  

International praise for the event

The event also drew international praise. Indian runner Varun, inspired by the well-organized event and warm crowd, remarked enthusiastically, "Beautiful thing, beautiful people, beautiful crowd. I'm already looking forward to running the half marathon next time!" 

Among the 80 runners from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, their shared sentiment was clear: Dongguan feels alive and youthful. A participant from Taiwan's Keelung City reflected, "This city is vibrant, full of energy, and makes you want to keep moving."

For many, the marathon was more than a race; it was a journey through personal memories and aspirations. Women's full marathon champion Xiang Xian, who once spent her childhood summers in Dongguan while her parents worked here, said emotionally, "Winning here means the world to me. Dongguan is my lucky place." 

Local running clubs and themed groups brought their own flair to the event. From dazzling cosplays to heartfelt tributes by industry running teams, the marathon became a vibrant tribute to Dongguan's creative and industrious spirit. 

The festive atmosphere extended beyond the track. Cultural stations, gourmet markets featuring Dongguan's iconic roast goose, and lively performances turned the marathon into a citywide carnival. For many runners, indulging in a slice of roast goose post-race was the cherry on top of a fulfilling day.  

The 2024 Dongguan Marathon wasn't merely an athletic competition—it was a celebration of life, inclusivity, and the community spirit. As the runners departed, leaving behind the echoes of cheers and triumphs, the city of Dongguan stood as a beacon of unity and inspiration, eagerly awaiting its next chapter.
