For physicist Matthew Musgrave, science and life seamlessly blend in Dongguan. Originally from the U.S., he joined the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) in Dongguan, a world-class facility that advances research in materials science, physics, and engineering, in 2022 as an associate researcher. When he comes off work, he enjoys jogging in local parks, exploring Chinese cuisine, and spending time with colleagues and friends.

At CSNS, Matthew and his team are preparing for a major new facility, aiming to advance scientific research in China. "Next year, we're continuing our project, and we expect to make some big improvements for the scientific community," he shared. But now, however, he's taking a break from high-energy particles to explore something entirely different, his first Chinese New Year in Dongguan.

Unlike previous years, when he traveled during the holiday, Matthew decided to stay put, embracing the local festivities with curiosity and enthusiasm. He visited the Zhongshuge Bookstore and the Mathematics Exploration Museum before immersing himself in the city's vibrant Spring Festival Flower Market. There, he showed the Chinese character "福" (fortune), sampled traditional snacks, and was fascinated by the graceful yet mysteriously balanced "Tang Dynasty Roly-Poly Doll" performance.

With two weeks off, his plans include hosting a home-cooked meal for friends and a trip to Guangzhou after the main celebrations. Reflecting on his time in Dongguan, he noted, "There's always something happening here, festivals, activities, it's been an amazing experience."
