Broadway's beloved musical Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will make its highly anticipated Asian debut at the Dongguan Yulan Theatre, running from October 23 to November 2 with 12 dazzling performances.
This marks a historic breakthrough as Dongguan becomes the first prefecture-level city in China to sign directly with a Broadway production team, joining Beijing and Shanghai as a hub for world-class theatre.
On September 11, Dongguan Yulan Theatre hosted the official media launch, where producer Marc Routh, along with Daniel Plimpton (Willy Wonka) and Cohen Toukatly (Charlie Bucket), made their first-ever appearance in China.
The event transported audiences into Wonka's magical world with a sweet musical preview. Cohen opened with I've Got a Golden Ticket, Daniel charmed the crowd with The Candy Man, and together they delivered a heartfelt rendition of Pure Imagination, leaving the audience eager for the full adventure.
Producer Marc Routh described the production as "not just a musical, but a dreamlike journey," noting that theatre has the power to transcend language through music, dance, and imagination. Both Plimpton and Toukatly expressed excitement about performing at the Dongguan Yulan Theatre, praising Dongguan's vibrant atmosphere and the venue's world-class stage technology, which will feature spectacular elements like a chocolate waterfall and a flying glass elevator.
As the finale of the 10th China·Dongguan Musical Festival, the production will also bring an immersive cultural experience to the city. Dongguan Yulan Theatre has partnered with local businesses and global brands to launch themed stores, "watch-and-stay" hotel packages, transportation discounts, youth workshops, and city-wide "chocolate encounters," turning Dongguan into a stage of sweet surprises both inside and outside the theatre.
This milestone follows the success of Matilda the Musical, which premiered and toured from Dongguan six years ago, further deepening the city's ties with the world of Roald Dahl. With the arrival of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Dongguan reaffirms its place on the global theatre map, showcasing its cultural vitality and international appeal.
