Six days, 11 games, and one unforgettable finale! The FIBA Women's Basketball League Asia-China 2025 (WBLA) came to a close on September 28 in Dongguan, with the hometown favorites delivering a perfect ending.
Representing China, Dongguan New Century Club Women's Basketball Team stormed past Japan's Fujitsu Red Wave 95-67 at the Dongguan Gymnasium, clinching the championship with an unbeaten run. Chinese player Yang Shuyu was named tournament MVP after a series of commanding performances that lit up the home court.
Launched by FIBA to elevate women's basketball in Asia, WBLA filled a long-standing gap at the club level. This year's games brought six of the region's top teams to Dongguan: Guangdong Dongguan New Century (China), Cathay Life (Chinese Taipei), Ulaanbaatar Amazons (Mongolia), Fujitsu Red Wave (Japan), BNK SUM (Korea), and AlUla (Saudi Arabia). Fans were treated to a true festival of Asian basketball, with fast-paced match-ups and plenty of star power.
Dongguan's triumph carried special weight. The club lifted the WCBA title for the first time in six years. Now, as the core of Team Guangdong, the squad will turn its focus to November's 15th National Games.
The women's basketball competition will take place from November 7-15 in Foshan. The event will feature 13 teams, with Guangdong drawn into Group II alongside Shandong, Hubei, and Zhejiang. The international competition in Dongguan not only sharpened the team's chemistry but also served as a valuable rehearsal before the National Games tip off.
The tournament also doubled as a test run for the upgraded Dongguan Gymnasium, which underwent a full renovation to meet "National Games standards." With new lighting, flooring, seating, and broadcast systems, the arena once again demonstrated why Dongguan is known as China's "City of Basketball."
The 15th National Games, set to open on November 9, 2025, will be the first-ever edition hosted jointly by Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao. The Games will be held across 19 cities, including Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Macao, with Dongguan proudly hosting the basketball men's competition and the weightlifting events.
