According to Hong Kong's Secretary for Transport and Logistics, the much-anticipated "Southbound Travel for Guangdong Vehicles" program is expected to begin as early as November.

The move will mark a new stage of closer integration between Hong Kong and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

As a reciprocal arrangement to the "Northbound Travel for HK Vehicles" policy, the new program will allow eligible private cars from Guangdong to apply for entry via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB). Once approved, drivers can travel into Hong Kong for leisure, business, or family visits, even to attend exhibitions, concerts, or shopping trips.

Initially, 100 vehicle quotas will be available each day, with permitted stays of around three days. Specific duration details are still being finalized.

Before entering Hong Kong, Guangdong drivers will need to purchase insurance, obtain a Hong Kong driving license, and complete vehicle inspection at designated mainland centers, part of a convenient one-stop service arrangement.

To support the new policy, the Airport Authority Hong Kong will open an automated "Transfer Car Park" at the HZMB Hong Kong Port artificial island in November, offering about 1,800 parking spaces.

Travelers can simply drive their vehicles to the designated drop-off area, where the system will handle parking. From there, they can board shuttle buses operated by the Airport Authority that take them directly into the airport’s restricted area to check in and board their flights, without going through Hong Kong immigration procedures.

A second "Visitor Car Park" is set to open in 2026.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong's parking facilities and shopping malls are already upgrading with EV charging stations compatible with both Chinese and European standards, aiming to make cross-border driving smoother and smarter for all travelers.
