On November 13, the weightlifting arena in Dongguan erupted with excitement during the 15th National Games. Competing in front of a home crowd, Peng Cuiting, a rising star from Shilong Town, Dongguan City, known as China's "Town of Weightlifting", delivered a historic performance in the women's 81kg category.
With a total of 271kg, she not only secured the first gold medal for Guangdong's weightlifting team but also stunned the nation by rewriting major records.
The competition brought together 12 of China's strongest athletes, including world champion and national record holder Liang Xiaomei. But from the moment Peng stepped onto the stage as the final contender in the snatch event, the atmosphere shifted. Her opening attempt at 123kg was clean, fast, and powerful, instantly breaking the national senior record and surpassing the existing Asian senior record. Cheers exploded throughout the arena.
Rather than settling, Peng boldly increased her second attempt to 128kg. Under the intense spotlight, she lifted with perfect control and confidence. Three white lights flashed, a new national senior record, and a lift exceeding the Asian and world senior marks. Although her final attempt at 131kg narrowly missed, the record had already been done.
In the clean and jerk, Peng showed composure rather than risk-taking, successfully lifting 143kg to secure her lead.
Born in 2001 and trained at the renowned Shilong Weightlifting Base, Peng Cuiting has built a reputation for her explosive snatch strength, having broken records in the 71kg and 76kg classes in previous years.
Returning to compete in her hometown, she pushed her limits once again, capturing gold, breaking records, and reaffirming Dongguan Shilong's legacy as a powerhouse of Chinese weightlifting.
