The recent COVID-19 outbreak in Shenzhen is likely caused by contaminated imported goods based on current epidemiological investigations, said the Shenzhen Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Jan.10.

Residents should avoid purchasing goods from overseas high-risk areas for COVID-19 unless necessary and should be cautious when purchasing goods from areas where local COVID cases have been reported, the Shenzhen CDC warned.

The CDC also reminded residents to avoid direct contact with the outer packaging of these items, wear masks and gloves when unpacking packages and deliveries, disinfect the deliveries and keep hands clean.

The CDC said that the virus causing COVID-19 cannot persist in the environment without being attached to something, and its survival time is affected by a variety of factors such as temperature, humidity and the type of carrier.

People are easy to become infected by touching virus-contaminated items with one's hands and then touching the mucous membranes of the nose and eyes. The virus can be easily inactivated by commonly used disinfectants such as alcohol, chlorine and peroxide disinfectants.

How to safely use courier pick-up and delivery services during COVID-19

I. We advocate contactless delivery.

People who wish to send or pick up parcels from residential communities or workplaces equipped with smart parcel lockers are advised to make full use of such lockers.

II. Wear a mask when picking up or sending parcels and minimize contact with others.

It is advised to have parcels placed at a designated site for contactless pick-up. If a parcel needs to be signed for in person, please keep a safe distance of at least one meter from the courier.

III. When picking up or unpacking parcels, disinfect the outer packaging with chlorine disinfectant or medical alcohol, or wear disposable gloves to avoid touching the parcel directly with your hands.

Please unpack the parcel outdoors if possible and discard the outer packaging according to household garbage classification regulations rather than taking it home.

IV. After handling the parcel, remove your gloves and wash your hands.

Please rub your hands thoroughly according to the seven-step hand washing technique, and avoid touching your mouth, eyes and nose with uncleaned hands.
