The "she" power in scientific development has become a hot topic amongst Nobel prize winners at this year's World Laureates Forum. Special seminars on the role of women in science have been held to discuss challenges in the area. Chen Tong takes a closer look.
At this year's forum, you'll find many female scientists sharing their findings. Since 2018, every year, there has been at least one woman winning the Nobel Prize. Women have become increasingly crucial in the science field. Cosmetic giant L'Oreal's said at the forum that a majority of the company's scientists are women.
VINCENT BOINAY North Asia Zone President & China CEO L'Oreal "We strongly believe that the world needs science and science need women. In L'Oreal, there are 4,000 scientists in the world. Two-thirds are women, and for all the patents we are doing every year, more than half come from women."
But there is still a long way to go. For example, among the Nobel Prize winners, only fewer than ten percent are women and most won the literature category. Women at the forum call for more girls to be interested in science.
HE YUAN Senior Teacher High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China "I want to say to girls 'Do not be affected by stereotypes. We need to be bold and to set ourselves free. You can study science and you can study well.'"
LIU YANG Co-founder, Guokr Interactive Information Tech "If I can suggest I hope that the community should all do something to give them more support when they have younger kids."
CHEN TONG Shanghai "It's estimated there are 40 million women working in the scientific field in China, accounting for over 45 percent of the total. As women play an increasingly important role in science development, it's become a critical issue to protect their rights and provide a fairer environment for them. Chen Tong, CGTN, Shanghai."
